With a few New York Yankees players returning from injuries in the last couple of weeks, the active roster was full.
When outfielder Willie Calhoun completed his rehab from a quad injury this week, it was time for the Yanks to make some tough decisions.
Well, they have made one: Calhoun is no longer a part of their 40-man roster.
“Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees returned OF Willie Calhoun from rehab, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and designated him for assignment,” the Yankees tweeted.

Calhoun went down with a quad strain a month ago, and he probably knew that would jeopardize his spot on the roster.
With the Yankees having so many alternatives in the outfield, most of them cemented their place in the team’s plans and that left Calhoun out.
The former top prospect hit .239/.309/.403 in 149 plate appearances before getting injured.
He started off the season with sluggish production, but was starting to resurface at the moment of suffering the quad strain.
The one thing that probably cost Calhoun his roster spot was the fact he doesn’t really play defense.
The other options the Yankees are fielding at the moment, such as Billy McKinney, Greg Allen, and Jake Bauers, are similarly talented with the bat but offer some defensive value.
Still, Calhoun is good enough to find an opportunity somewhere else with a major league team.
There is a chance he is claimed via waivers or clears them and gets to enter the free agent market.
If he can’t find another MLB deal, the Yanks will gladly have him in Triple-A as depth.
