The Dallas Cowboys have had plenty of talent over the last couple of years, but they only have one trip to the divisional round of the playoffs during that time period to show for it.
For the squad dubbed “America’s Team,” anything less than a Super Bowl championship is considered unacceptable.
This season, the Cowboys have a shot at their first world title since 1995 with the addition of wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Some may feel the pressure is squarely on head coach Mike McCarthy, but ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith says it’s actually on quarterback Dak Prescott.
In his seven seasons in the NFL, Prescott has played pretty well, getting named to the Pro Bowl twice and establishing a career completion percentage of 66.6 percent.
But it’s hard to find fans or observers outside of Texas that consider him an elite quarterback.
He has been criticized over the years by Smith and others for not raising his game in big games and pressure situations, and he simply hasn’t gotten the job done.
In last year’s divisional playoff round, Prescott threw just one touchdown pass and two interceptions in Dallas’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and before that, he led the NFL with 15 interceptions during the regular season.
Now is the time for Prescott to take things to a higher level if the Cowboys are to win it all anytime soon.
People can mention McCarthy’s shortcomings or his reported desire to call offensive plays this season, but the NFL is a player’s league, and the quarterback position is the most important one in all of sports.
