Years ago, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were the two best quarterbacks in the NFL, and they forged a memorable rivalry.
They faced each other in the playoffs five times, and those battles were fairly evenly matched, as Manning won three of them.
There is an outstanding new crop of young QBs in the league right now, and two of them — Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow — have a chance to establish an epic rivalry of their own.
It’s something commentator Nick Wright pointed out, although he also pointed out a potential problem Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals could be facing that Manning and the Indianapolis Colts had to deal with.

Burrow is angling for a contract extension that could make him the highest-paid player in the NFL, and with star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase soon to be up for his own extension, it could make it hard for the Bengals to remain intact.
Manning was paid extremely well by the Colts, but he and his team only had three AFC Championship Games and two Super Bowl appearances to show for it in 13 seasons.
On the other hand, Brady perhaps wasn’t paid his market value by the New England Patriots, but that extra salary cap space made it easier for owner Robert Kraft to surround him with an excellent crew.
Mahomes, as Wright points out, doesn’t make top dollar, and neither does teammate Travis Kelce, who is the best tight end in football.
But those discount contracts have given the Kansas City Chiefs enough breathing room to assemble a squad that has won two of the last four Super Bowls.
