The New York Yankees are one of a few teams that were relatively quiet at the trade deadline.

Their only major move was to acquire Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox.

While the move could help bolster the bullpen, New York didn’t do much else.

The Yankees currently find themselves in last place in the American League East with a record of 55-52.

They are 11 games back of first place and are 3.5 games back in the Wild Card race.

On Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post commented on the Yankees’ trade deadline and why he ultimately views it as a failure.

“This was not about a trade deadline. This was not about a day. This was about an organization that has done a ton wrong for about 36 months…and they are paying a price now.”@Joelsherman1 & @JonHeyman assess Yankees puzzling trade deadline

Sherman believes that the Yankees made a mistake by giving up prospects to acquire Middleton and other pieces, even dating back to last year.

He noted that the Yankees are in a predicament right now, as their only two headline players are Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole.

Sherman says that the solid performances of Judge and Cole over the last several years have covered up a lot of mistakes made by the Yankees front office.

The Yankees acquired a few players last year at the trade deadline.

However, Sherman doesn’t think that it moved the needle enough.

Two of the major acquisitions from last year’s deadline, those being pitchers Scott Effross and Frankie Montas, are out for the season.

Montas is also on an expiring contract, meaning he likely will not be back with the Yankees next year.

Sherman stated that this is a failure 36 months in the making and that one trade deadline can’t be pointed to as the root of the issues, but rather, the fact that the Yankees have made several mistakes and are now paying the price for them.
