For the third straight year, reports from the San Francisco 49ers‘ camp about Trey Lance aren’t exactly encouraging.
Some state that he’s not anywhere near what they expected in terms of development, and that has to be concerning at some point.
However, Niners QB coach Brian Griese recently dismissed that narrative, stating that being healthy has allowed Lance to get much better this offseason, boosting his mechanics to throw the football the same way he used to do it when he was in college.

Still, it’s hard to believe that something isn’t going on there.
Lance has been underwhelming and unimpressive in three straight camps, according to reports, and while he was a work in progress and a project when they got him in the Draft, one would expect him to put the growing pains behind him at some point.
Injuries have kept him on the shelf more often than not, so it’s not like he had that many chances to prove himself and learn from his mistakes.
But the fact that it only took a handful of starts for the Niners to go with Brock Purdy as their QB1 for the foreseeable future also speaks volumes about his development — or lack thereof.
Lance was a big gamble, and he seemed to have sky-high potential.
He’s still quite young, and the traits might be there.
But at this rate, it doesn’t seem like he’s ever going to be able to live up to the expectations or at least establish himself as the undisputed No. 1 guy in the Bay.
