Multiple NBA stars will try to take home the glory for Team USA in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup.

But even though they have great talent, it might not be enough.

Tim Bontemps thinks America’s neighbors to the north might be able to take them down.

Speaking to ESPN, via Cooper Jones, Bontemps said why Canada could be the team to beat: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

According to Bontemps:

“The Canadians enter this tournament, arguably with the single best player in the entire field, in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He’s as good, or better than Luka Doncic and anybody the American team has.”

Bontemps noted that Nikola Jokic won’t be playing for his Serbian team and Giannis Antetokounmpo might sit out too.

That makes Canada even more dangerous for Team USA and Luka Doncic’s Slovenian team.

Team Canada is packed with stars.

Gilgeous-Alexander is definitely their number-one player but they also have Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Lu Dort, Kelly Olynyk, and others.

Over the last few years, Canada has become a hotbed of NBA talent and many of the stars coming from that country are headed to the World Cup.

Team USA has compiled its own formidable team, featuring Anthony Edwards, Austin Reaves, Paolo Banchero, Jalen Brunson, Brandon Ingram, and others.

Still, they are surely worried about what Team Canada can do.

Team USA finished seventh in the tournament last time and they are adamant about doing better this year.

But the competition is actually even tougher this summer so that is a tall order.

Head coach Steve Kerr and his players certainly have their work cut out for them.
