The Cleveland Guardians lost Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-1.
They scored just three runs on Sunday, too.
These days, that’s about the best-case scenario for Cleveland: not having the injured Josh Naylor has made an already bad offense even worse.
This week, when Jose Ramirez is forced to serve his suspension for the weekend’s brawl against the Chicago White Sox, the lineup has “unwatchable” potential.
The latest victim of the situation was rookie pitcher Gavin Williams.
Williams, who made his MLB debut this season, has mostly been amazing for the Guards, with a 2.90 ERA in 49.2 innings.
On Monday, he was masterful against the Jays, with seven scoreless innings, one hit, one walk, and 12 (!) strikeouts.
Unfortunately, he failed to get the win because his offense didn’t provide any support whatsoever.
“In MLB history, there have been 73 games pitched meeting the below stat line: 12+ K, 0 or 1 H, 0 or 1 BB. Gavin Williams (8/7/23 vs Blue Jays) and Randy Johnson (9/16/1992 vs Angels) are the only 2 pitchers whose team lost after tossing such a stat line,” Cleveland Stats tweeted.

He obviously didn’t lose the game himself, since he allowed no runs, but his team scored just one run and it was after he left.
The Blue Jays scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to take the victory.
Cleveland has fallen 5.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins after dropping eight of their last 10 games.
It was their decision, though: opting to sell at the deadline and trading Aaron Civale and Josh Bell.
They still have a chance to get back into things with a positive streak, but they need to actually score runs to make that happen.
