It’s no secret that the running back position is in a rough place.

Throughout the 2023 offseason, it’s been widely noted that NFL teams continue to devalue the position, evidenced by the numerous cuts.

Elite players like Josh Jacobs, Ezekiel Elliott, and Dalvin Cook have been either cut or franchise-tagged, leading to frustration.

Melvin Gordon recently made his feelings known, as shared by ESPN’s Jamison Hensley via JPA Football.

“We’re kind of screwed, I feel like, for the next couple of years,” Gordon said.

At one time, Gordon was considered one of the NFL’s best running backs.

Between injuries and varied on-field performances, Gordon is now relegated to one-year contracts.

He most recently signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, a backup in case J.K. Dobbins’ injury persists.

Running back contracts aren’t likely to be resolved in the near future, leaving players like Gordon frustrated.

As he indicated, “The only thing we could do is just kind of stack it and ball out.”

Several of the league’s top backs took part in a Zoom call, trying to resolve the disconnect between them and their respective organizations.

This might result in action from front offices, but it isn’t likely to happen until after the 2023 season at minimum.

Gordon seems to believe if backs continue to prove their worth on the field, teams will be forced to pay them more.

Will the collective action result in changes?

Or, will wide receivers, quarterbacks, and key defensive positions continue to be paid, leaving the running backs behind?
