The New England Patriots and Houston Texans faced off in one of the first preseason games of the year.

The game ended with a Texans victory, taking down the Patriots 20-9.

In this game, the Patriots rolled out three different quarterbacks, as Bailey Zappe, Malik Cunningham, and Trace McSorley all saw the field.

Mac Jones was the only rostered quarterback that didn’t play, given his current role as their starter.

After the game, Zappe was asked about the state of the position, and how the competition is going.

Via NBC Sports Boston, Zappe said, “We want what’s best for the team.”

He also added, “We want to win no matter who is out there.”

Several NFL media indicated that Zappe should be given more opportunities in 2023 and beyond given how he played in 2022.

In  2022, he racked up 781 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

He had a two-touchdown game against the Cleveland Browns.

If Jones struggles at all in 2023, Zappe could see the field, especially given the offseason reporting that’s surrounded this team.

Many have suggested that Bill Belichick is in the hot seat, especially if the Patriots don’t return to the playoffs.

This is an organization that’s used to success.

Missing the playoffs twice in the past three seasons isn’t ideal, which could lead to some mid-season changes if things aren’t up to par.
