The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the 2023 season looking to prove many of their doubters wrong, and at the start of the season, they were doing just that.
In fact, as late as July 1, they were 16 games above the .500 mark and on pace for a 96-win season.
Unfortunately, things have changed since then.
The D-Backs lost on Friday night by a final score of 10-5 against the San Diego Padres and dropped to 57-59 on the season.
It was Arizona’s ninth straight loss.
Now, they are only one game ahead of the Padres for third place in the NL West.
On Twitter, MLB insider Bob Nightengale noted just how bad things have gotten in the desert.
The Arizona #Dbacks’ woes continue. They lose their 9th consecutive game, and have now lost 25 of their last 32 games.
They were 16 games over .500 on July 1 and on pace for a 96-win season, but now are 2 games under .500 (57-59), just a game ahead of the 4th-place #Padres.

The D-Backs looked like a clear postseason contender earlier this year.
They even added reliever Paul Sewald at the trade deadline in a deal with the Seattle Mariners.
But that did little to help calm the storm.
Arizona was in first place to start the month of July.
Now just over a month later, they are quickly slipping in the standings.
The D-Backs are 12.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the division.
They are still alive in the Wild Card race, sitting just three games back of the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs.
But the Cubs have gotten hot, and the D-Backs are going in a completely different direction.
They’ll need to turn things around quickly if they hope to stay afloat in the Wild Card race.
The wheels appear to have fallen off for the D-Backs.
