The San Diego Padres have been one of baseball’s most disappointing teams in 2023.
While things haven’t gone completely off the rails just yet, San Diego is not in a good spot.
On Sunday, they dropped their second consecutive game against the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks and fell to 56-62 on the season.
San Diego was busy in the offseason, adding pieces such as Xander Bogaerts, Michael Wacha, Seth Lugo, and Matt Carpenter to their roster.
However, things have not gone according to plan for the Friars.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Manny Machado had called the series finale a “do-or-die” game.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale pointed out just how crushing Sunday’s loss was for the Padres.
Manny Machado called today’s game ‘do-or-die.’
If true, the #Padres season just died in the desert.
They lose 5-4 to the #Dbacks, and drop to 56-62, 5.5 games out of the final wild-card berth.

San Diego fell to the Diamondbacks by a final score of 5-4 in Sunday’s series finale.
The Padres will now head home to take on the Baltimore Orioles, who own the best record in the American League.
Needless to say, things aren’t about to get any easier for the Padres.
Nightengale notes that if Sunday’s game was truly a do-or-die game for the Padres, then things don’t exactly bode well for the team as the final two months of the season play out.
The Padres are now 5.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
While there’s still a little bit of time to right the ship, the Padres are not in a good position by any means, and this week’s set with the Orioles is certainly a crucial one.
