During a big chunk of the first half, the Los Angeles Dodgers watched how the Arizona Diamondbacks led the NL West standings.
However, the season is 162-games long for a reason: to separate the good from the truly elite, you need lots of games.
That helps take away much of the randomness and small sample-size concerns that could affect the standings over a brief period of time.
Now, after four-and-a-half months of baseball, the Dodgers have returned back to where they belong: first place in the NL West and one of the most dominant teams in baseball.
As FOX Sports: MLB reminds us, they have an ongoing eight-game winning streak.

Not only that, but the gap between the Dodgers and the second-place team in the NL West, the San Francisco Giants, is now a whopping 8.5 games.
LA has an elite 71-46 record and appears to be rounding into form.
That record is the third-best in baseball after the Atlanta Braves and the Baltimore Orioles.
The Dodgers are just four games behind the Braves for MLB’s best record, and if we had a nickel, we would bet that LA is the one finishing the regular season with the best record.
Dodgers fans already enjoyed a historic regular season last year, with 111 wins.
However, they would trade more than a few wins for a chance to win the World Series.
That’s the ultimate goal for the Dodgers: last year, they were eliminated by the San Diego Padres in the NL Division Series.
This time, they want the team to go all the way.
