The New York Mets will host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday at Citi Field.

It’s not just another game, though.

Yes, the Mets’ season has gone south for some time now, which resulted in their decision to sell at the deadline, but Tuesday will be Edwin Diaz bobblehead day for the first 15,000 fans in attendance.

The pitcher himself posted a message on Twitter expressing his excitement.

Can’t wait to see all the mets fans tomorrow https://t.co/6fYWLkS1vb

He “can’t wait” to see Mets fans, meaning he will be at the stadium.

In fact, there will be a chance for a few lucky fans to get their hands on a signed bobblehead.

The Mets haven’t been good this year, with a 54-65 record and little to no chance of making the playoffs.

A big reason behind the team’s struggles has been not getting the chance to send Diaz out there to the mound to protect leads in the ninth inning.

Perhaps the best and most dominant reliever in baseball, Diaz has had to miss the entire 2023 campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury in the World Baseball Classic.

The saddest part is that the injury didn’t occur in a game situation: it came when Puerto Rico was celebrating a big victory in the group stage.

The Mets have certainly missed Diaz and the 1.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts (in just 62 innings!) he had last year for a team that won 101 games.

There was a slight chance he returned this year, but with the Mets out of the postseason picture, there is little reason for them to rush him back.

He will return in 2024, hopefully fully healthy and ready to roll.
