The Kansas City Chiefs enter the season in a position that has become somewhat familiar to them.

They’re the reigning Super Bowl champions, and as hard as it is, some believe they have a legit chance to go back-to-back.

That’s why they need to keep their stars fresh before the start of the season, keeping them ready for when it actually counts.

With that in mind, HC Andy Reid recently announced that Patrick Mahomes and the starters will play in the first half of their preseason game versus the Arizona Cardinals (via James Palmer).

Andy Reid says the #chiefs starters will play the first half vs. #Cardinals. Expect Mahomes and others to possibly play less. The flow of the game always dictates what ends up happening

Nonetheless, he did say that Mahomes and some others will likely play less, adding that the flow of the game will dictate what happens eventually.

This is a bit risky, and the Chiefs shouldn’t take any crazy chances here.

Their veterans already know their gameplans and schemes like the back of their hands, and while they obviously need some reps together to get into a rhythm, their health should be their first and foremost priority.

There’s a reason why not many teams have been able to win the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons.

The Chiefs have reached the AFC Championship Game in every season that Mahomes has been their starting quarterback.

And even if Chris Jones’ situation doesn’t get settled before the start of the campaign, the expectation is that they’ll continue to be the team to beat in the league, at least for as long as they’re all at full strength.
