The San Francisco 49ers are been in a quarterback competition throughout the offseason.
After injuries to Brock Purdy and Trey Lance, the team brought in Sam Darnold, turning this into a three-horse race.
While differing reports have surfaced in the last several weeks, Adam Schefter recently gave his pick for the starting role.
On the Pat McAfee Show, Schefter said, “Brock Purdy is the starting QB,” adding, “What they do behind him is up in the air.”
“Brock Purdy is the starting QB and I think what they do behind him is still up in the air..
I think it’s pretty close between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold for who’s number two”@AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/i1LK025yKK

Schefter believes Purdy did enough during the postseason to keep the job, even though he’s coming off a UCL tear.
He did mention the fight for QB2 is very close, and it could come down to the wire.
Darnold has the most experience of these three but hasn’t lived up to his initial hype.
As a highly-touted recruit, Darnold was expected to turn the New York Jets’ situation around.
When he wasn’t able to do that, the team quickly pivoted, much like their current situation with Zach Wilson.
He’s being given another chance, hoping to prove himself as more than a career backup.
Lance has only been in the league for two years, but due to inconsistencies and injuries, also hasn’t gotten a real chance.
He is also fighting tooth-and-nail for the QB 2 role, where one of these players will be thrust into action if Purdy gets injured.
Several factors are at play for this 49ers team.
After an NFC Championship appearance in 2022, they’re looking to move full-steam ahead with Purdy at the helm, per Schefter.
