The Los Angeles Angels have reached a point of desperation in their season.

After buying at the deadline, they have slipped in the Wild Card standings and own a record of 60-63.

In order to right the ship, the Halos turned to their minor league system and called up the recently drafted Nolan Schanuel.

Schanuel got the start at first base for the Halos on Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays and picked up his first Major League hit.

He also was a part of a key triple play turned in the ninth inning.

As a result, he became the first player to be involved in a triple play in his MLB debut since catcher Sal Fasano on April 3, 1996.

Sarah Langs of MLB.com provided this interesting fact on Twitter.

This is certainly an interesting piece of history.

Triple plays are so rare that it isn’t always easy to track who was a part of them.

Fasano was a part of one back in 1996 when he made his MLB debut.

27 years later, Schanuel found himself in the middle of one.

After the first two outs were recorded, the young first baseman delivered a strike to the plate to barely nab Rays slugger Yandy Diaz.

That ultimately kept the game tied at six runs apiece heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Unfortunately, the Angels couldn’t capitalize and fell short, losing 9-6.

However, it was still a rare and interesting moment that Schanuel got to be a part of in his MLB debut.
