The Tom Brady era is over for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and there has been some question as to who will take over for him under center.
They brought in the talented but flawed Baker Mayfield, but it looked like it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that he would get the starting job.
But according to insider Ian Rapoport during an appearance on Pat McAfee’s show, Mayfield “is in pretty good position” to be the Buccaneers’ QB1 for Week 1 of the regular season.

When Mayfield was made the No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, it looked like he would become the league’s next great QB and that the long-suffering Browns had found their savior.
While he showed some flashes of excellence (he set a rookie record for touchdown passes), all too often he was a disappointment, and he reportedly had trouble getting along with teammates and members of his coaching staff.
Cleveland traded him to the Carolina Panthers last offseason, but he lost his starting job after he sprained his ankle in Week 5.
Mayfield was then released in December and finished the year with the Los Angeles Rams after they lost Matthew Stafford to a spinal cord injury.
Mayfield’s talent is undeniable, but he hasn’t put it all together yet in five pro seasons, and time is running out for him to truly tap into his potential.
But if he does figure it out, the Bucs may be able to surprise people, as they still have stud wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans.
