The GOAT debate in the NBA has really started to heat up over the last few years, with superstar forward LeBron James starting to reach milestones that no one thought was even possible.
Last year, James passed Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, which was a record that was held for 39 years.
This turned a lot of heads around the league and got a lot of people talking about the GOAT debate once again, that now seems to have only two players in James and Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan.
Former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy recently chimed in on the debate with an interesting twist about Jordan and James on the “Knuckleheads” podcast with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles.
Stan Van Gundy:
“If you want to tell me that Michael Jordan was a better basketball player than LeBron James, that’s fine. You can make a case for that. What you can’t make a case for is that MJ had a better career than LeBron. You can’t make a case for that.”

Van Gundy makes the case that Jordan may have been the best player, as he’s arguably the best two-way player the league has ever seen, while the current Lakers superstar doesn’t have the same kind of defensive prowess.
However, Van Gundy believes James has had the better career, even though he is two NBA titles shy of Jordan’s six.
It’s a reasonably valid argument, as James’ longevity has been incredible, considering that he’s going into his 21st NBA season in October and will turn 39 in December while still arguably playing at an elite level.
This debate will rage on forever will everyone having a spin or twist here and there, but both players make a case that will always create a stir, especially when one generation debates another.
