Training camp invites positional battles for teams, and the San Francisco 49ers turned heads when they announced their quarterback depth chart a few weeks out from Week 1 of the 2023 season.

Brock Purdy was listed as the starter which made sense given what he managed to do at the end of the 2022 campaign into the playoffs.

It was the No. 2 spot that had the league doing a double take as the 49ers selected Sam Darnold to backup Purdy, relegating Trey Lance to third on the depth chart.

Going into the offseason, fans were wondering how Kyle Shanahan would decide between Purdy or Lance as the starting quarterback, but it appears that the latter has fallen further down than initially anticipated.

The former No. 3 overall pick was once thought to be the future of the iconic franchise, but now is more than likely on his way out.

Rumors swirled that San Francisco is looking to trade Lance and Colin Cowherd offered a couple of suggestions via his show Herd with Colin Cowherd.

“I’d roll the dice if I was Minnesota behind Kirk Cousins,” Cowherd said. “Or Chicago. Who’s going to backup Justin Fields?”

The Minnesota Vikings are set with Kirk Cousins, though he is not the long-term solution for them so taking a gamble on Lance might make sense.

However, the Chicago pick is more far-fetched as Justin Fields is coming off a strong sophomore season and should be the starter for the foreseeable future.

Either way, Lance could have a new home in the coming weeks and it’ll be interesting to see who trades for him.
