This may be the beginning of the end of Trey Lance’s time with the San Francisco 49ers, as he has been named their third-string quarterback behind Sam Darnold and starter Brock Purdy.
Lance has been thought to have plenty of potential, but he has barely played in two NFL seasons, partly due to injury.
The 49ers are rumored to be preparing to eventually trade him, and commentator Nick Wright says that the Los Angeles Rams should call them and make an offer for Lance, via “First Things First” on FS1.
Pass Attempts since 2018 (regular season & playoffs, incl. college):
Sam Darnold: 1,765
Brock Purdy: 1,700
Trey Lance: 420

As Wright pointed out, Lance has played very little in terms of actual game action dating to college, and while at North Dakota State University, the signal-caller faced lesser competition.
He could perhaps still become a good quarterback in time, but what he needs is extensive game action in order to develop, and barring another injury to Purdy (he tore the UCL in his throwing elbow during the NFC Championship Game), it won’t happen in San Francisco.
Purdy did very well since taking over as the Niners’ signal-caller in Week 13 of last year, and he could very well have what it takes to become their first true franchise QB since Steve Young in the 1990s.
Meanwhile, the Rams have an aging Matthew Stafford at quarterback, and while they’re high on rookie QB Stetson Bennett, there is no guarantee he will succeed.
It should be pointed out that the 49ers and Rams are historic NFC West rivals, so it’s anyone’s guess whether the two teams would deal with each other in good faith in a potential Lance trade.
