Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat just had one of the most important seasons of his career.

Behind his leadership, the Heat were able to create an impressive, unexpected run all the way to the NBA Finals.

Although Butler and his team didn’t win the championship, they are still getting a lot of recognition.

Jason Timpf compared Butler to a former NBA icon, Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics.

Speaking on The Volume, via NBACentral, Timpf said why Butler is similar to Pierce during his prime:

“He’s another one of those guys who’s kind of a super weird archetype and was never truly considered to be on the same level as the guys at the very top of the league but in any one-game setting against those guys, he was capable of outplaying them.”

Pierce got his start in the NBA in 1999 and played for the Celtics for most of his career.

For his first few years, the Celtics weren’t a team to write home about, as noted by Timpf.

But when Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett joined the team, Pierce became an essential part of the NBA’s most-feared trio.

It was that trio that helped lead the Celtics all the way to a Finals victory.

Pierce wasn’t always considered the best of the best and there were many critics and detractors who discounted him throughout his career.

But in the end, he earned his championship as well as ten All-Star selections, a Finals MVP, and a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Timpf says that Butler isn’t always spoken of when people discuss the best players in the NBA.

But he is someone who shouldn’t be counted out and is still capable of great things.
