The New York Mets have invested a lot of dollars in their roster.
Just this past offseason, they made considerable investments in Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, Starling Marte, Justin Verlander, Mark Canha, and others.
Some of them aren’t with the team anymore but that doesn’t mean the Mets aren’t paying them.
If they want to keep a fan favorite around for the long term, however, they will need to pony up yet again.
Pete Alonso will hit the free agent market after the 2024 World Series.
He has blossomed into one of the league’s premier power sources and despite playing first base, has cemented his place as a valuable piece for the future.
If the Mets want to extend Alonso without having to compete with offers from other teams, they will have to do it before the 2024 campaign expires.
A Mets legend, Mike Piazza, spoke about Alonso’s situation.

I believe in my heart it will be but of course, there’s work to be done on that front,’” SNY tweeted, with Piazza’s quotes and a clip.

Piazza thinks like the average Mets fan: the desire to keep Alonso around for the long haul exists.
Even Alonso himself made it clear that he loves being a Met, so it’s a matter of agreeing on the numbers and other things relative to MLB contract negotiations.
With 185 career home runs already and 39 this year, there are very few players with more power than Alonso.
He should be a Met for life, but en extension doesn’t seem imminent.
