The Dallas Cowboys made a shocking trade right before the start of the 2023 season when they sent a 2024 fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Trey Lance.
Lance had fallen out of favor in San Francisco as he was listed as their third-string quarterback behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, a fall from grace for the former third-overall pick.
With Lance so far on the depth chart, the 49ers began exploring trades for the young quarterback and the Cowboys apparently liked him enough to acquire him.
Dallas already has an established starter in Dak Prescott and a quality backup in Cooper Rush, so fans were initially confused as to why they would go after Lance.
Shortly after news of the trade broke, Stephen A. Smith wasted no time in mocking the franchise via his X account.

Smith starts the video off by laughing and then begins to question whether or not Dallas believes in Prescott long-term.
He then goes on to make fun of the Cowboys by saying that Lance isn’t going to help them this season.
Smith has always had it out for Dallas and their fans and the puzzling move provided him with an easy reason to go after them.
From a pure value standpoint, taking a swing on a dual-threat quarterback with such a high draft pedigree makes sense and could be considered a smart move for the Cowboys if Prescott can’t hold up physically.
However, the organization might not see what they truly have in Lance until injuries force them to roll him out onto the field.
