For much of the 2023 season, the St. Louis Cardinals have been able to rely on their offense to score plenty of runs, despite how frustrating the season has been for them.
However, things have changed this month.
The Cardinals own a 9-16 record in August and head into Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres sitting 20 games below .500 for the first time since 1995.
Though the pitching has been the main issue this season, the offense is the culprit for this most recent slide.
Last night, Blake Snell became the eighth pitcher in the last 12 games to put together a quality start against St. Louis.
On Twitter, St. Louis sports radio host Brandon Kiley pointed out this distressing fact, as well as the list of the starters who have dominated the Cardinals over this stretch.
Blake Snell is the 8th pitcher in the past 12 games to put together a quality start against the #STLCards.
Five of those eight starters have gone at least seven innings while allowing 1 or 0 earned runs.

Of these eight starters, five of them have gone at least seven innings, allowing one run or less.
This is quite a concerning trend the Cardinals are following right now.
The offense was widely considered to be among the best in the league at the beginning of the year, with stars such as Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Jordan Walker, Tommy Edman, Lars Nootbaar, and Nolan Gorman.
However, things have taken a turn for the worst with just two games remaining in the month of August.
At this point, the Cardinals’ focus is on 2024 and returning to contention as quickly as possible after a rare down year, but their offensive struggles are certainly concerning given the names in the lineup.
