Luis Severino Had A Much-Needed Start On Monday

Over the years, Luis Severino has been a reliable, consistent performer for the New York Yankees when he has been healthy enough to pitch.

Injuries have been a factor in every year since 2019, though, with the exception of 2022.

In 2023, he opened the season on the injured list with a lat strain, but unlike other years, he wasn’t good when he got healthy.

His ERA was over 8.00 at one point and he said, at one point, that he felt like one of the worst pitchers in the league.

The struggles were so bad that the Yankees may have already decided against bringing him back next year (he is a free agent after the World Series).

It’s important to note, however, that he has looked much better in his most recent two outings.

On Monday, Severino dominated the Detroit Tigers, keeping them off the scoreboard for seven innings.

He struck out eight and allowed just five hits and no walks.

He has been so lousy this year that even with consecutive scoreless starts (he also held the Washington Nationals to zero runs last week), his ERA for the season is at 6.64 in 81.1 innings.

Still, it’s good to see him dominate for two turns in a row, even if the competition level (the Nationals and the Tigers) isn’t the highest out there.

If he can close out the season on a high note, perhaps he can convince the Yankees to bring him back.

In any case, he should have every motivation to pitch well in the remaining weeks of the regular season to entice teams to take a shot on him next year.
