The San Diego Padres reached the bottom of the eighth inning leading by a score of 5-3 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

As it has happened often this season, they relinquished that lead and the home team tied the score at five runs per squad to reach extras.

If you have followed the Padres’ season in 2023, you know that when they reach extra-innings, they are likely going to lose.

It’s an amazing phenomenon that is difficult to explain: San Diego is 0-11 in such games.

0-11.

It’s unbelievable.

They have been so bad that they are about to tie a record, but not the kind you would want.

“The Padres are now 0-11 in extra-inning games this season. That is the 2nd-worst record in extra-innings in a single season in MLB history (1969 Expos, 0-12),” ESPN Stats & Info tweeted.

One more extra-inning loss and San Diego would tie the 1969 Expos for the worst record in games decided after the ninth inning.

With a 62-71 record, the Padres are fourth in the NL West.

It has been a highly disappointing season for them, particularly if we consider their +55 run differential.

How can a team have such a good differential and such a bad record?

Well, the Padres have been pitiful in one-run games and in extra-innings games.

There is most of the explanation behind their overall struggles.

Clutch performance just hasn’t been there, and the lack of that competitive edge in the later innings has come back to haunt them.

The Padres are highly unlikely to make the 2023 postseason, in part because reaching extra-innings is almost a guaranteed loss.
