New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is one of MLB’s premier power hitters.
He will probably hit under .300 in every season of his career as batting average is not his forte.
When it comes to power production, however, there are few like him.
Alonso and the Mets haven’t agreed on a contract extension, and 2024 will be his last season of salary arbitration before he hits the open market.
In the last few days, some league executives seem to believe the Mets could trade Alonso during the offseason ahead of their last year of team control.
It will largely depend on how they plan to approach the 2024 season; if they want to compete or if it will be used as a soft transition year to fully compete in 2025.
If they decide to compete, keeping Alonso is a good idea.
If not, he could potentially be on the move.
Mets players aren’t necessarily on board with this plan, though.
“Several Mets players plan to privately meet with Steve Cohen to appeal for the team to keep Pete Alonso, per @DeeshaThosar,” Talkin’ Baseball tweeted.

Not only is Alonso popular among fans, he is quite respected in the Mets clubhouse and dugout, too.
Players are not only fond of him on a personal level, but they know he is a difference-maker at the plate.
He is 28 and already has 185 career home runs, 39 of which have come in 2023.
He is one homer shy of his third 40-HR season.
Keeping Alonso around could cost a lot of dollars, but he should be able to live up to the hype and maintain his power production as long as he is healthy.
