There are countless valid reasons to be concerned about the new-look Dallas Mavericks.
While their roster is much better now, and their defense should no longer be an issue with the new acquisitions they made in the offseason, there are still some serious doubts about Kyrie Irving’s ability to coexist with Luka Doncic.
From a basketball perspective, we’re talking about two ball-dominant players with a high scoring mentality but lack of ability to play defense, so that’s a concern.
But more than that, we’ve seen Kyrie Irving wreak havoc in every single locker room and organization he’s been a part of since he entered the league, and his unpredictability raises questions about his ability to accept the fact that he’s not the alpha dog there.
However, team owner Mark Cuban said in The Pat Bev podcast that Kyrie is actually quite mature, stating that he’s no longer the same 19 or 25-year kid he once was and that all he wants is to win, even knowing that the Mavs are Luka Doncic’s team (via Ball is Life).
Mark Cuban on @PatBevPod: “People talking about Kyrie and Luka fitting together. Ky knows this is Luka’s team…He’s not a 19-year-old Ky anymore. Or a 25-year-old Ky anymore. He’s a mature 31-year-old Ky and he wants to win.” pic.twitter.com/KG3gLQIAQj

We’ve heard that story before and history definitely isn’t on his side.
Also, Doncic has constantly denied all the rumors about not being happy in Dallas, but he looked quite miserable last season, and some have questioned his maturity in the past.
The Mavs have the potential to make some serious noise in the West for years to come, but two volatile characters and big egos in a locker room can always end in disaster.
