Ravens GM Calls Out 49ers Over Trey Lance Report

The San Francisco 49ers‘ experiment with Trey Lance ended a week ago when they traded him to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round draft pick.

It was a meager return for a quarterback thought to have so much potential that the 49ers gave up plenty of draft capital two years ago when he was the No. 3 pick in the draft.

Prior to the trade to Dallas, there was a report that the Baltimore Ravens were interested in acquiring Lance, but per Dov Kleiman, GM Eric DeCosta said that the report was misleading and inaccurate.

#Ravens GM Eric DeCosta implied that the #49ers openly shopped QB Trey Lance to Baltimore and were turned down, instead of the Ravens being the ones showing interest.

After two seasons in the NFL, Lance hasn’t gotten much on-field experience during actual games, and while he could still become a very good player, the feeling is that he simply isn’t seasoned enough right now to do well on a consistent basis.

He was a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo as a rookie, and he was named the starter just prior to last season, only to suffer a severe ankle injury in Week 2 that kept him out for the rest of the schedule.

He showed stretches of fine play during the preseason in August, but Brock Purdy’s unexpected emergence late last season apparently made Lance expendable.

Furthermore, with one of the most talented rosters in the league, San Francisco is in win-now mode, which means they don’t have the luxury of waiting for Lance to become whatever he will become.

Now in Dallas, Lance could end up being the heir apparent to Dak Prescott, especially if Prescott continues to struggle in playoff games, as he did against the 49ers in last year’s Divisional round.
