Right now, with the start of the 2023 NFL regular season less than a week away, many people are very optimistic about the Detroit Lions.

They seem to be the odds-on favorite to finish first in the NFC North, and some may even feel they can be a dark-horse contender in the conference.

GM Brad Holmes says he has “very high” confidence that Detroit will win the division, and he talked about how his team navigated some very dark years to get to this point, per Eric Woodyard via Dov Kleiman.

Last season, virtually no one was expecting Detroit to do anything positive, and therefore it was no surprise when they lost six of their first seven games.

But they then took eight of their last 10 games, and they did so with a very potent offense that finished the season fifth in points and fourth in total yards.

The Lions just barely missed the playoffs in 2022, but with their division looking weaker, this could be the year they return there for the first time since 2016.

They have a good quarterback in Jared Goff, a Pro Bowl wide receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown, and an intriguing prospect in incoming second-year wideout Jameson Williams.

Furthermore, Aaron Rodgers left the Green Bay Packers while the Minnesota Vikings lost Dalvin Cook and Adam Thielen this offseason.

The Lions haven’t won a single playoff game since the 1991 season, and they seem determined to end that streak of futility.

They certainly seem to have the talent to do so, especially on the offensive side of the football.
