When the Dallas Mavericks swung a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving in the middle of the 2022-23 NBA season, they understood they were taking a big risk.
Irving has found ways to cause controversy and drama at every stop and that was no different this past season when he found himself in highly publicized situations with the Brooklyn Nets.
The Nets refused to extend Irving who then demanded a trade.
Dallas apparently deemed the star guard worthy enough to go all-in for, though the first half season of their partnership didn’t go as planned as they missed the playoffs.
Despite the disappointing outcome, the Mavericks gave Irving a three-year deal in free agency.
While Dallas is probably happy to have not lost Irving, they and the rest of the world must’ve been confused when he posted a cryptic message on his Twitter account.
“Smear campaigns are created by all the Cowards in our world,” Irving tweeted. “They Throw their rocks and then hide in the crowd and hope you crash out. And When you find out who it was/is and see them in person, go check their temperature face to face lol, I promise you their energy is different.”

It’s hard to say who or what prompted this message from Irving, though it’s hardly out of character as he has a knack for this sort of stuff.
Perhaps he is calling out fans and media members who have ridiculed and criticized him over the years, but either way it’s a bizarre statement to make at this juncture of the offseason.
