Say what you will about the San Diego Padres, and they will probably deserve it: that they wasted another season of Juan Soto’s prime, that they can’t win close games, that they are a disastrous extra-inning or clutch team.
However, there is no way you can blame Blake Snell for their disappointing season.
Yes, the team is currently 66-75 and in fourth place of the NL West, with no real chances of making the playoffs at this point.
But Snell is definitely not to blame, otherwise he wouldn’t be getting Cy Young consideration in the National League.
Thanks to Codify Baseball, we can see Snell’s game logs, but reduced specifically to show how many earned runs he has allowed per start.

It’s a work of art: he has only surrendered more than three earned runs twice.
The last one, when he allowed six earned runs against the Boston Red Sox, was on May 19.
In 155 innings, Snell boasts an impressive 2.50 ERA.
He is having his finest season since 2018, when he won the Cy Young award in the American League when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.
If there is a knock against Snell, it’s his elevated number of walks.
He has surrendered 89 this year, but when you consider he has also struck out 201 batters (his highest output since 2018), he has more than made up for it.
It’s too bad the rest of his teammates (most of them) haven’t performed in accordance to expectations.
The Padres were among the four best teams in the 2022 campaign.
This year, however, everything that could have gone wrong, has gone wrong.
