The 2023 NFL regular season finally begins on Thursday with an intriguing contest between the Detroit Lions and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs are looking to start a journey that they hope will end with their third world championship in five years, while the Lions will try to live up to the hype that surrounds them and finish first in the NFC North.

Unfortunately, this contest has lost a good deal of its luster because Travis Kelce, the excellent tight end for Kansas City, has been ruled out with a knee injury.

BREAKING: Travis Kelce is OUT for tonight’s season opener vs the #Lions, per sources.

I’m told the #Chiefs’ All-Pro TE made a strong push to play after this morning’s workout, but the team did not want to risk anything with a full season of games ahead. pic.twitter.com/41iIZeWuYs

Needless to say, fans are disappointed.

Kelce out for tonight’s game! So sad to hear this news, but it’s probably the right decision for the team. Hoping he recovers quickly and is back in action soon.

This fan feels that perhaps the Chiefs should just mail in the stats for this game.

But this fan is still confident in the Chiefs’ chances of a Week 1 victory.

The right decision, no reason to risk it in week 1. Chiefs will still win though.

Kelce hyper-extended his knee during practice on Tuesday, and he reportedly has inflammation and a bone bruise.

Bone bruises can be tricky to deal with, as they can sometimes take a considerable amount of time to heal.

The Chiefs already had a challenge when it came to their passing game because of the departure of JuJu Smith-Schuster, their most productive wide receiver in 2022, during the offseason in free agency.

With the possibility of Kelce missing multiple games, it is of vital importance that at least one of their young wideouts steps up big-time.

Meanwhile, Detroit has a great opportunity to start their season the right way — with a W.

They haven’t made the playoffs since 2016 and haven’t won a playoff game since the 1991 campaign.
