The worst-case scenario for the Kansas City Chiefs to start the 2023 NFL season seems to be coming to fruition.

The defending Super Bowl champions will likely be without their best defensive player, Chris Jones, and arguably the best offensive weapon outside of Patrick Mahomes, with superstar tight end Travis Kelce set to miss Week 1.

Although the Chiefs have been optimistic that Kelce might be ready for the season opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night in Kansas City, the decision has been made to keep the two-time Super Bowl champion on the sideline, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

BREAKING: Travis Kelce is OUT for tonight’s season opener vs the #Lions, per sources.

I’m told the #Chiefs’ All-Pro TE made a strong push to play after this morning’s workout, but the team did not want to risk anything with a full season of games ahead. pic.twitter.com/41iIZeWuYs

As if not having Jones wasn’t a big enough blow to the team’s chances of winning their first regular-season game in 2023, losing Kelce changes the way the Chiefs’ high-powered offense plays, and that could prove costly.

Even though the Lions aren’t expected to be a title contender this season, Jared Goff and company are expected to be a talented offense with a decent defense that could result in a playoff berth in the NFC down the road.

That said, the Lions won’t be a team that will be put away easily on Thursday night, as Detroit is a team that has some hype around it this year and will look to take advantage of a weaker-than-usual Chiefs squad on opening night.

However, Kansas City still has Mahomes under center, which will always keep this team in games no matter who is around him, so the Chiefs might still be able to pull out this win.
