Professional sports in the United States can come off as arrogant in other countries worldwide that also have professional sports teams and leagues, with the phrase “world champions” being thrown around when the country doesn’t compete with others in leagues like the NBA, MLB and NFL.

This was made abundantly clear recently when American Olympic athlete Noah Lyles called out leagues in this country for dubbing their champions “world champions” when they win a title.

This statement by Lyles, although completely on point, caused quite a stir among professional athletes in the United States, as some believe that these sports have become international competitions due to all the talent coming from different areas of the world.

However, Lyles’ point still remains sound, and his words got even louder on Friday when Team USA lost to Germany in the FIBA World Cup after the Americans had been favored to win it all throughout the entire tournament.

Unsurprisingly, Lyles took to social media to like a post about him, proving his point, via Bleacher Report.

With the Americans finishing no higher than third in this international basketball competition overseas, it’ll be interesting to see what Team USA does heading into the Olympics next year, as it won’t be all that surprising to see NBA superstars come out in force in the same way they did with the Redeem Team in 2008.

Although the Team USA squad that played for Steve Kerr in this tournament was talented, there were no superstars on the squad, as it was a team filled with promising young players looking to make a name for themselves.

Next year, it’ll be interesting to see what players choose to play for Team USA and whether that team can contend with the best of the best in the world.
