The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had to go through one of the biggest transitions in the NFL, with superstar quarterback Tom Brady deciding to retire shortly after the 2022 season came to an end.

This forced the Buccaneers into a tough situation to replace arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, resulting in the team bringing in veteran journeyman Baker Mayfield.

Along with having to replace Brady, which is an impossible task, to say the least, the Buccaneers were posed with a deadline to get a contract extension done with star wide receiver Mike Evans.

As arguably one of the most consistent star wideouts in the NFL, Evans has proven his worth time and time again in Tampa Bay, but it seems the team has no plans to ink him to an extension at this point, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

WR Mike Evans —who wants to finish his career a Tampa Bay Buc—gave the team a deadline of 9/9/23 to offer a contract extension. While the team values Evans, there are no plans for an extension at this time, per league sources.

If this turns out to be true, it could impact Evans’ plans to retire with the Buccaneers, as he can test NFL free agency next year.

If Evans has another solid season in Tampa Bay, he’ll have no shortage of suitors when the time comes, even though he’ll turn 31 next August.

In all nine seasons he’s played with the Buccaneers thus far, Evans has racked up 1,000 yards or more with four seasons of 12 touchdowns or more.

Clearly, Evans is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and deserving of a contract extension, but for whatever reason, Tampa Bay seems prepared to lose him after this season.
