The San Antonio Spurs have a lot of potential right now and are trying to figure out their future.

That future will apparently be without Cameron Payne.

Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Spurs are waiving guard Payne.

Wojnarowski states that Payne will now have a chance to join a “contending team that can give him a bigger role.”

If you don’t remember seeing Payne in a Spurs jersey, that’s because he has yet to play a game for Gregg Popovich’s team.

He was recently sent to the Spurs with a 2025 second-round pick and cash considerations in exchange for a protected second-round pick in 2024.

That deal went down in July which means that Payne has never actually suited up for the Spurs and never will.

Now people are wondering where Payne will end up.

Last season, the guard averaged 10.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game with a 41.5% field goal percentage.

During his four seasons with the Suns, Payne proved himself as an important and reliable sixth man.

Before Phoenix, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Payne started in just 15 games last season and played an average of 20.2 minutes per game.

Wojnarowski’s reporting suggests that the Spurs didn’t have a lot of space for Payne and that he’ll have a better chance of playing more with a different squad.

What squad will that be?

With the right contract, Payne could be a big acquisition for a number of teams.

He is just 29 years old and could have many years left in the league.

Where will he spend those years?
