After an awful 2022 NFL season that resulted in five wins following the acquisition of superstar quarterback Russell Wilson, the Denver Broncos decided another drastic change needed to be made, and as a result, the team parted ways with head coach Nathaniel Hackett and hired Sean Payton as his successor.

That change was thought to be significant enough to help change the culture of the team and potentially get the most out of Wilson, especially if he’s on the downside of his career.

In Week 1, the Broncos had the ideal situation in order to get off on the right foot against the division rival Las Vegas Raiders, who were coming off an equally disappointing season in 2022.

Unfortunately, even though the game was played in Denver, the Broncos weren’t up for the challenge and lost by one point on the home field, prompting Nick Wright of FOX Sports to claim this team is no different from what it was last season.

“The Broncos looked just like the Nat Hackett Broncos. … They can’t score points, same as last year.”

With Payton expected to be a considerable upgrade over Hackett, that’s a brutal statement to make, as it means the storied franchise has fallen flat two years in a row with their major offseason decisions.

However, it was only one game, and a play or two goes a different way, and this is a different conversation.

So the Broncos have plenty of time to turn things around, and they’ll need to after making the moves they’ve made because if it keeps trending this way, Wilson may not be in the Mile High City for long.
