Despite adding multiple top prospects at the deadline, it’s hard not to label the New York Mets season as a failure.
The preseason expectations were just too big, especially after they won 101 games in 2022 and brought in Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, and others.
However, things went south and the Mets are currently 65-78, fourth in the NL East and dangerously close to last place.
Organizationally, they have wanted to bring in a president of baseball operations ever since Steve Cohen took over as owner.
Current GM Billy Eppler is aware of the plan and knows that Cohen wanted to wait for the right person that would eventually outrank him in baseball decisions.
For years, David Stearns has been that person, and now, Cohen can finally say he is a member of what the Mets want to build for the future.
Fans, of course, have reacted to the news on Twitter, mostly celebrating the fact that the Mets have a capable, creative young executive to lead the rebuild.

Stearns is a native New Yorker who comes from a family of Mets fans, and fans absolutely love that.
He will have every motivation to make the Mets his life project, professionally speaking.

Just about every contender would have loved to have Stearns in some capacity, so the Mets are extremely excited to have him on board.
It’s important to point out that Stearns could have access to more free agents and player extensions than he did in Milwaukee because of Cohen’s financial power.
