The NBA world has been torn over controversial statements from one of the world’s best track and field athletes.
Noah Lyles has made public comments about the league, diminishing the accomplishment of the NBA Finals.
He believes teams can’t call themselves world champions, considering they only play against other US-based teams.
The public opinion is widely against Lyles, and many current and former athletes have weighed in.
Paul George recently gave his perspective, as noted on his podcast via Legion Hoops.
George said, “From his perspective as a USA athlete, he’s right about being a world champion when competing on that scale and winning the goal medal.”
Paul George on Noah Lyles’ comments:
“I think he’s right, technically… From his perspective as a USA athlete, he’s right about being a world champion when competing on that scale and winning the gold medal. But, if you’re in the NBA, which is the best of the best in basketball… pic.twitter.com/rAbHskOikA

George was also quick to add a caveat to these comments, saying, “If you’re in the NBA, which is the best of the best in basketball with players from various countries, then you’re a world champion.”
The NBA is the most-watched and most well-known basketball league in the world.
Players come from far and wide to try and compete in this league due to its competitiveness, and the exposure NBA players get is next-level.
NBA athletes are widely marketed across the globe, and many have fans in several countries.
George recognized Lyles’ point when talking about the Olympics or the FIBA World Cup but still believes in the NBA.
Lyles is currently ranked as the world’s best 200-meter sprinter.
He is an elite athlete in his own right, but many believe he should stay in his lane, focusing more on running than semantics.
