The Houston Texans are on the ground level, and they have pinned a lot of their hopes for the future on rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, the No. 2 pick in April’s draft.

He had a lackluster start to his pro career in Week 1 when he completed 28 of 44 pass attempts and failed to throw a touchdown pass in Houston’s 25-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Stroud is now dealing with a shoulder injury, and per Yahoo Sports NFL, he is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The contest versus the Colts is supposed to match up Stroud with another promising rookie quarterback in Anthony Richardson, whom the Colts took No. 4 in the 2023 draft.

Richardson was also a mixed bag in his NFL debut — he went 24 of 37 for 223 yards and threw one touchdown pass and one interception in Indianapolis’ loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In his college days at Ohio State, Stroud was a stud who put up 3,688 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes in 2022, plus 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns the year prior.

He was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy both years and in 2021 he had a dazzling performance in the Rose Bowl, throwing for 573 yards and six touchdowns, both of which were Rose Bowl records.

In doing so, he led the Buckeyes to a come-from-behind 48-45 win over the University of Utah.

The future could be bright for the Texans, but it will be a long-term process, and there is no need for them to make Stroud play if there is any risk of aggravating a current injury or risking a more serious additional injury.
