The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to become the first team in nearly three decades to win consecutive Super Bowl championships.
However, their campaign was derailed on opening night after a 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.
They got right back on track in Week 2, limiting the Jacksonville Jaguars to nine points in a victory.
With the Chiefs looking like legitimate contenders again, Nick Wright compared them to one of the greatest NFL teams of all time.
“The Chiefs are the ’89 Niners — a team also trying to win back-to-back championships, had a rough Sept. before reeling off a playoff run of 126-26 behind Joe Montana’s MVP season & one of the greatest teams of all time,” Wright said during a recent episode of FS1’s First Things First.

While the 2023 Chiefs’ goal of winning back-to-back Super Bowls is the same as the 1989 49ers, Joe Montana and company sustained their momentum under first-year head coach George Seifert.
As Wright said, they outscored their opponents 126-26 in three playoff games.
The dominating season culminated in a 55-10 victory for the 49ers over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.
The return of Chris Jones and Travis Kelce gave the Chiefs a boost in Week 2 against the Jaguars.
They will look to sustain the winning tide when they welcome the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 3.
It’s a game they must win, given all the problems the Bears are currently facing.
