The Boston Celtics are embracing this season with a different mentality.

According to some reports, coach Joe Mazzulla reached out to multiple team legends, urging them to be more present and join the team to try and develop a winning culture and stronger mentality ahead of the season.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long before Paul Pierce answered the call, joining them in practice and mentoring the younger players.

When asked about Jayson Tatum’s mindset for the upcoming campaign, Pierce stated that the young forward is well aware of the hard work it takes to get the job done, as he’s been deep into the playoffs multiple times in his career, although he hasn’t been able to get over the hump just yet (via Celtics on CLNS).

Paul Pierce describes Tatum’s mindset going into this season: “Nothing’s easy and he understands that. He’s been through long journeys in the playoffs and hasn’t gotten over the hump.”

Notably, people expected Tatum to take a leap forward this season as a leader.

His contributions on the court are undeniable, but his character has been put into question multiple times.

He’s gone to great lengths to shut down the narrative of him being a playoff choker, as he was outstanding in the postseason last year.

But fans still want to see him being more vocal, and there’s a big need for leadership now that Marcus Smart is no longer with the team.

Tatum doesn’t strike one as a loud or outspoken guy — and that’s perfectly fine –as he’s more of the ‘lead by example’ kind of player.

Still, someone will have to take the bull by the horns this season and make sure to keep everyone in line.
