A Week 6 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday produced a difficult result for quarterback Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers as they suffered a loss and saw their record drop down to 2-3 this season.

Despite having one of the top quarterbacks line up under center each week, the Chargers just can’t ever seem to figure out how to take advantage of Herbert’s skills each season.

Herbert has already thrown for over 15,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in his NFL career, however, Los Angeles only has a 27-27 record with him in the starting lineup since 2020.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg declared that the Chargers are currently wasting Herbert’s career (via Dov Kleiman).

“[The Chargers are] wasting, just as they did with Philip Rivers, the career of a Hall of Fame quarterback [in Justin Herbert].”

“They are wasting the career of a hall of fame quarterback. Just like they did with Philip Rivers. If he was in Miami with Mike McDaniel right now…”… https://t.co/14gjU9FOg6 pic.twitter.com/56Z2iefEfT

Four seasons into a player’s career seems a bit early to declare someone a Hall of Famer, especially if that player is a quarterback who has never led his team to a playoff win.

But Greenberg clearly feels that Herbert has already displayed the talent of what takes to get a gold jacket from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Are the Chargers wasting their current quarterback’s career like Greenberg claims they are?

Well, they wasted the first three seasons in which they had him on a rookie contract, and now they have to pay him a much higher salary each year moving forward.

But with Herbert now locked down for a few more seasons, Los Angeles should still have plenty of time to figure out how to translate their quarterback’s success into the overall success of the team.
