The New York Knicks unexpectedly made the playoffs and won their first playoff series since 2013 last season, and they’re looking to build upon that success this year.

They’re entering the new basketball year with largely the same roster they had during the 2022-23 season, and internal improvement will be needed for them to take the next step.

One of their most promising young players is guard Immanuel Quickley, who averaged 14.9 points a game last season while picking up his shooting percentages to a respectable level.

But per Fred Katz, Quickley wasn’t given an extension prior to Monday’s deadline, which means he will become a restricted free agent next summer.

The Knicks did not extend Immanuel Quickley before tonight’s 6 p.m. deadline, league source tells The Athletic.

Quickley will now become a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

New York certainly wouldn’t want to lose Quickley, who, as his name may suggest, is a quick guard who can put up points and get others involved.

He was originally the No. 25 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he was traded to the Knicks shortly afterward.

He finished last season with a flurry, averaging 19.7 points a game in March while putting up three of his five 30-plus point games of the season in the final weeks of the schedule.

The main man in the backcourt for New York is Jalen Brunson, their big 2022 free-agent signing who spearheaded their playoff run and registered 24 points and 6.2 assists a game in the regular season.

They would also love for wing RJ Barrett to become more consistent and pick up his shooting percentages, especially from 3-point range, while also improving his defense.
