The San Francisco 49ers looked mighty after blowing out the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago, but they have since lost two games in a row, and now the complexion of the season is looking a little different for them.
They fell to the struggling Minnesota Vikings on Monday, 22-17, as quarterback Brock Purdy had his second consecutive subpar game, throwing two interceptions, one of them coming during what could’ve been their game-winning drive with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
The Niners are still 5-2, but commentator Nick Wright said on “First Things First” that the Niners shouldn’t be the favorites to come out of the NFC, yet if they traded for Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, they would be.
“The 49ers should not be the NFC favorites. If they want to be, they should call Minnesota and trade Brock Purdy for Kirk Cousins.”

Purdy has been mostly excellent ever since taking over the starting job in Week 13 of last season, and on Monday, other than his two interceptions, he did enough to give San Francisco a chance to win by completing 21 of 30 passes for 272 yards.
He is just in his second season, and it is too early to conclude he is overrated just because he has come up short in back-to-back games.
Cousins, on the other hand, is a proven commodity, and while he may not be an All-Pro signal-caller, he is a good one.
The win on Monday gave him the NFL lead in touchdown passes for the season with 16, and he has made the Pro Bowl in three of the last four seasons.
The problem with the 49ers possibly trading for Cousins is the fact that he’s 35 years of age and in the last year of his contract, and he wouldn’t be a long-term solution for them at all.
They’re a relatively young team that could contend for up to the next five years, and Cousins doesn’t seem to fit that timeline.
