Analyst Singles Out Chiefs’ Biggest Problem This Season

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a big upset on Sunday when they lost to the struggling Denver Broncos, 24-9.

It was a frustrating game for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who went 24 of 38 and threw two interceptions and no touchdown passes.

While tight end Travis Kelce caught six passes for 58 yards and is having his usual excellent season, the Chiefs don’t have a consistently reliable wide receiver, something that Marcus Spears pointed out per NFL on ESPN.

“They have a wide receiver problem in Kansas City. … they have yet to identify a guy on the outside that can consistently win.” @mspears96 thinks Patrick Mahomes needs more help on the perimeter pic.twitter.com/qz1XdPYZlW

While Kelce has 583 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the season, only one of Kansas City’s wide receivers — rookie Rashee Rice — has more than 300 receiving yards.

As great as Kelce is, he simply cannot be the only bona fide threat in their passing offense.

While the team is third in passing yards and sixth in passing touchdowns right now, those numbers are misleading, and a good defensive team will be able to make Mahomes struggle, as the Broncos did on Sunday.

In the past, Mahomes had Tyreek Hill, who is arguably the best wideout in the NFL, by his side, and after he was traded during the 2022 offseason, the Chiefs enjoyed 933 receiving yards from JuJu Smith-Schuster last season en route to their second Super Bowl championship in four seasons.

The trade deadline is on Tuesday, and there has been some speculation that the Chiefs may try to take a big swing in order to give Mahomes another weapon in the air in order to bolster the championship hopes.

This Sunday, they will face Hill’s current team, the Miami Dolphins, who are 6-2 and have the league’s top offense.
