The preseason predictions for the Dallas Mavericks weren’t extremely positive, but in the early going of the schedule, they have been one of the NBA’s best teams.

They came into Friday’s contest against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 6-2 record, which is the second-best mark in the Western Conference behind only the defending world champion Denver Nuggets.

One of the reasons for their fast start has been newcomer Grant Williams, a 3-and-D forward they acquired via trade in the offseason from the Boston Celtics — he’s averaging 14.0 points while shooting 52.9 percent, both overall and from 3-point range, in his first eight games.

During their home contest on Wednesday over the Toronto Raptors, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs was seen sitting courtside, and Williams gave him a shoutout on Twitter.

Kansas City doesn’t have an NBA team, and Williams is glad to have arguably the best player in the NFL on his team’s side being visible at games.

But even with the two-time Super Bowl champion in the house in Dallas, the Mavs lost to the middling Raptors, 127-116, as Williams struggled offensively and the Raptors’ Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby went off for 31 and 26 points, respectively.
