It’s been the tale of two stories for the Denver Broncos so far this season.

They entered the campaign with high expectations, and Sean Payton’s trash-talking and dissing of the previous regime put a huge target on their backs.

Needless to say, starting the season 1-5 and allowing 70 points in a single game made it seem like they should’ve just blown things up and traded everybody before the deadline, but that wasn’t the case.

They did move on from a couple of veterans, but not because of a rebuild.

Now, they’ve won three games in a row and look like a legitimate threat to get into the mix for a Wildcard spot.

When asked about that, coach Payton simply stated that we’re talking about NFL-caliber players, adding that there’s a big difference between a groove and a rut (via Justin Churchill).

#Broncos HC Sean Payton: “It’s the NFL. Credit these guys. There’s that fine line between a groove and a rut. I felt like we have been practicing during the week a lot better…”

Payton always had the utmost confidence in his players’ ability to figure things out, and he stood by that through thick and thin.

The defense turned the corner in a big way after that historically bad performance against the Miami Dolphins, even handcuffing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs’ proficient offense.

The Broncos have some winnable games ahead of them, and with Russell Wilson playing better and the defense stepping up to their usual level, it’s hard to count them out.

Most people criticized them for not trading their stars ahead of the trade deadline, but the faith they had in their project is finally starting to pay off.
