The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the feel-good stories of the 2023-24 NBA season, with Joel Embiid and company firing on all cylinders in the post-James Harden era while sitting atop of the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 8-2.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t been all sunshine and smiling faces for the 76ers this season, with the team recently learning about Kelly Oubre Jr. being involved in a hit-and-run incident that put him in the hospital with injuries that are expected to keep him out an extended amount of time.
Not only was the news unfortunate for obvious reasons in terms of threatening Oubre’s career and health moving forward, but he had been an incredible addition to the team this season and was one of the reasons for the team’s impressive play thus far.
On Wednesday, things got even worse for the 76ers, with news coming out about the surveillance footage of the incident involving Oubre and how it may not be what was described by the veteran journeyman, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer via NBACentral.
Police have stated that the surveillance footage reviewed to date from the reported hit-and-run involving Kelly Oubre Jr. does not show any indication of an accident happening at the Center City junction where Oubre said he was struck on Saturday night, per @PompeyOnSixers

With the team playing at a very high level right now, even though they saw their winning streak end this week with a loss to the Boston Celtics, the Oubre news doesn’t help the situation in Philadelphia.
After the Harden fiasco over the summer, the 76ers only wanted positive vibes moving forward and seemed to be on the right track, with the team winning a lot of games and seeing Tyrese Maxey turn into a star.
Obviously, this is not a step in the right direction and will likely be a distraction for this talented team.
